Urgh. I feel exhausted and ill and under the weather (which is shite as is) and I'm anxious about packing and moving but too cold and tired to do anything about it and the new midshipman is mean.
Sailing was wonderful, apart from the fact that it was too windy for us to actually go sailing. We slept on the boat (a Bermuda rigged sloop *nods*), which was great - the kitchen! My uncle cooked a roast dinner, in his boat's kitchen! And it is so amazing, and beautiful and it is called Maj (pronounced 'May', for it is a Swedish boat). So, because it was too dangerous to sail, we stayed in the marina. Mum and brothers lounged around with uncle's wife, but my uncle was absolutely ecstatic to have someone so enthusiastic. I learnt: different types of rigging, tacking, points of sail, how to send a mayday, boat signals, how to use the radio, how to use the winches and about a dozen knots. He said I had a natural flair. Oh, so exciting! I can do a bowline around myself with one hand and my eyes closed. I've never been good at anything remotely practical, so this is very exciting. He suggests I take a Competent Crew exam, and then he could take me with him when he sails to Lisbon! AIEEE!
Highwayman's hitch = BEST KNOT EVER.
I also gave him one of my many pimping copies of Master and Commander, and his was probably the best reaction so far. He skimmed through, occasionally reading a sentence: "'Can you hand, reef and steer?' Ha! I'm going to love this book! A running bowline for a man overboard? What? Oh, more rigging! Oh, I didn't know that sail was around then! Oh, I will love this book!"
